City Sidewalks Renovation Project

Application of ¼” Stamped Brick Pattern

The Village of Antioch, Illinois, committed to a downtown city walk renovation and chose to remove an aging, deteriorating overlay brick stencil, replace in excess of 36,000 SF of sidewalks with new concrete, and add a new 3’ wide stamped overlay accent strip to new and old concrete sidewalks.

The chosen pattern and system was the running bond “used” brick ¼” stamp overlay by Concrete Solutions, Inc. The ¼” Stamping Overlay contract was awarded to Mannina Construction, Inc., whose president is Mike Mannina, a Certified Concrete Resurfacing Network applicator.

The existing stenciled overlay was ground off to expose the original concrete. The existing sidewalk was pressure washed, acid washed, neutralized with ammonia, and integrally sealed and densified with an alkali activated colloidal silicate penetrating sealer called “Hydroseal™”. All of the new concrete work was cure-sealed with “Hydroseal & Shield™” curing compound. (Refer to www.hydrocrete.com)

Mike’s team applied the Running bond brick stamp to the ¼” stamping mix to achieve the desired accent strip. The mix was colored with Concrete Solutions integral Brick color, and the liquid release was tinted with the Brick Antiquing color. Once the stamp texture dried, several colors were added to the individual brick forms, using antiquing tints and liquid release. Once complete, a diluted Acrylic Urethane coating was sprayed on using acetone resistant pump-up sprayers. This kept the volatile fumes of the Acrylic Urethane at a minimum. A final coat of Acrylic Urethane was applied with a light broadcast of #80 Aluminum Oxide granules.

All control joints were re-cut to the original width, and new control joints were added at visible stress points. The control joints were opened up to the depth of the stamp overlay using a ¼” V cut blade, thereby ensuring a clean and sealed edge. The joints were finished with a brushed on application of Acrylic Urethane.

The result was well beyond the expectations of the Village engineers and custodians. This truly represents the diversity of the systems available from the Concrete Resurfacing Network Certified Installers.
