Epoxy & Urethane Floor Systems
The reason epoxy and urethane treatments are applied to concrete on residential, commercial, and industrial floors is simple: Protect the substrate, prevent chemical damage, maintain an ergonomically safe environment, and enhance the aesthetic value of the area.
If you are contemplating the use of an Epoxy and/or Urethane finish system, here are two basic facts:
An Epoxy is applied in thick coatings, cures to a high compressive strength, yet is susceptible to micro scratches, thereby it tends to loose its sheen over a relatively short period of time. Epoxies have low resistance to UV damage, and if exposed continuously, turn opaque or yellow
Urethanes are applied THIN, dry to a very tough finish, and are extremely resistant to chemical attacks, micro scratches, and Ultra Violet rays
The CRN Institute teaches applicators to always apply a clear urethane top coat over an epoxy application. Why? Our jobs look better, far longer.
The greatest strength of Epoxies and Urethanes is also their greatest weakness: they lack Breathability. This makes the applied products highly susceptible to hydrostatic (moisture vapor) failure. From the positive side of a covered area (the top), the protection can be absolute. From the negative side (the bottom) of a covered area, the story is different. Adhesion to the substrate from an Epoxy or Urethane product is based on a clean, dry, and etched surface. Once that surface becomes corrupted by moisture, it slowly but surely creates a pressurized vessel, and loosens the non-breathable coating. The intense competition for this very lucrative market creates complex solutions to this common problem. CRN's exclusive Substrate Stabilization™ program answers moisture based failures with SIMPLE solutions. We experienced many of the known problematic moisture related issues, and found affordable and easily replicable solutions.
We feature products and systems which have been used on thousands of square feet with excellent results. We use various aggregates such as latex paint chips, quartz crystal, proprietary blends of high impact resistant compounds, which are mixed within a base of selected epoxies, and then finished with our selected urethanes. Based on our experience and success rate, we are confident that our featured systems, will continue to provide both applicators and consumers the desired results and longevity.
